Day 3 Marazion to Porthleven 10.5

The weather forecast was poor for today but we got away with a little rain in the morning although it was dull and windy for most of the day.
Last views of St Michael's Mount.

Prussia Cove

Praa Sands
After a loo stop at Praa Sands we ascended the cliffs once more and passed the old copper workings.
Greystone Mines

The day ended at Porthleven with a cup of Cornish grown tea at the 'Twisted Currant' cafe while we waited for the bus back to Penzance.

Porthleven
This was our last night at Penzance as we were moving on to stay at Helston for two nights so packing was the task when we returned to the guest house......remember to check the drawers!

Day 2 Lamorna Cove to Marazion 9.5

After a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast we caught the bus back to Lamorna Turn and walked down to the cove to resume walking on the coast path.

The path started off a bit rocky but soon levelled out as we approached Mousehole. This is a very popular spot for tourists to visit and even has its own buses.

We had a coffee here on a sheltered seat near the harbour but there was a cool wind blowing keeping the temperature down.
The four mile section between Mousehole and Penzance is all on tarmac but there are some points of interest along the way.

The Penlee lifeboat station is now closed. Sadly the whole crew of the lifeboat were lost in December 1981 whilst trying to rescue the crew of the Union Star.

At this point Margaret left me as she was walking on to Marazion and I was only going as far as Penzance as I had walked the last bit previously.
Newlyn was the next place, famous for its artists and its home to the Cornish fishing fleet. Some of the boats in the harbour had seen better days!

The coast path around Newlyn is quite depressing, boardings covered in graffiti, a working place not a pretty place.
Before long you are on the wide promenade that leads into Penzance.

Penzance Harbour

St Michael's Mount
Margaret carried on to Marazion and the tide was right for her to cross the causeway to St Michael's Mount. It was closed as it was Saturday!
A much easier day than yesterday and I had plenty of time to stroll around Penzance and get a feel for the place.

Day 1 Lands End to Lamorna Cove 11

The day started off well with a trip to Landsend on the bus and then easy walking on the cliff tops to the Minack Theatre and Porthcurno beach.
Longships Lighthouse

We passed some beacons on the cliff top that helped sailors to know where they are, now superseded by GPS.

We also saw some Choughs that wouldn't sit still for a photograph but this is what they look like.

Some of the cliff paths were covered in beautiful wildflowers.
The cliffs around Porthgwarra are full of holes and arches and Margaret took the opportunity to explore one of them.

It was a bit cool and cloudy but very dry underfoot and by lunch time the sun had come out. We tried hard to see the Minack Theatre without paying but it is well hidden from view so here is an overhead view of what we missed!

There was a choice of walking down the road to the beach or descending some steep and tricky steps, so of course we descended the steps, Well it was the first day of our walk after all! Time for lunch and a paddle.

The plan was to visit the cafe but it was closed so we carried on to Penberth Cove, a pretty little place.
Between here and Lamorna Cove the path deteriorated and was hard to follow and then descended to the beach at St Loy's Cove strewn with boulders.
It didn't improve. from here to Lamorna Cove the path was difficult with lots of clambering over rocks which made us miss the bus. Fortunately it wasn't the last bus so we had time for a drink in the 'Lamorna Wink' before catching the last bus at 7.15 back to Penzance for a meal at Wetherspoons. Our first day over and quite a mixed one. Time for early bed zzzzz

Penzance 27-30 April 2017

Here we are back again for part 3 of our walk starting at Landsend where we finished last time and walking to Plymouth. We decided to stay the first four nights in Penzance and use the buses to get to and from the start/finish points. Our journey to Penzance on a bus and three trains was uneventful and we duly arrived in time at our first B&B Honeydew Guest  House conveniently situated close to the train and bus stations. We enjoyed staying here and were made very welcome by Stacey and Joe.
